UN Sustainable | التنمية المستدامة

In 2015, the United Nations compiled 17 goals which were aimed to foster sustainable development moving towards 2030. These goals, known as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are extremely impressive, far-reaching and admirable goals for our world as we grow to 8 billion people using more resources than ever. To many, these goals may seem out of reach, or even ‘not our problem’, but in this studio, students will explore how specific sustainability goals apply to their community in a real and tangible way. In doing so, students will break down these felt limitations and demonstrate methods and tools to engage in sustainable development starting in our own communities.

In this studio, students will address the UN sustainable development goals. The purpose and process will entail designing responses ranging from devices to campaigns which use a selected set of UN sustainable development goals to address a gap or issue originating in the student’s own community. Through highly-specific and locally-rooted concepts of sustainable development, students will demonstrate how a combination of small-scale physical intervention and large-scale conceptual thinking can break down these far-reaching goals into manageable and actionable steps forward. The end product is not the aim of this studio, but rather broadening concepts which seek to address the underlying issues and gaps in students’ communities. For example, for the massive wildfires in California, students would look at how the cause - a combination of tree health and faulty power lines - could be improved, rather than design a device which shields a user from a fire. Their solution could be a device that runs along the power lines and trims back adjacent branches to reduce arcing and eventual fires.

Students will begin with a first phase which entails researching, understanding, and choosing specific aspects of the selected goals which they feel are particularly deficient in their community. These local gaps or challenges will be analyzed and evaluated to begin understanding the nuances of what lies ahead.  Finishing out this phase, students will generate grand-scale conceptual responses to the challenge.

As students enter phase two, they will be tasked with designing small-scale yet distributed, autonomous interventions which are a physical manifestation of the large-scale conceptual response.  And finally, in phase three, students will design campaigns and policies which enact their responses, suggesting how these conceptual and physical responses can be implemented in the real world.

Project Description

This project and the device is a device that works on solar energy only and does not need any other energy source, a device capable of converting moisture into water

This device is made of composite crystals composed of organic metal structures pressed between the solar collector; Tablet capacitor. The device is placed inside an open room for air to leak; At normal temperature. When air circulates inside the composite cavities, water vapor molecules are suspended on the internal surfaces of the device. The sunlight entering the device raises the temperatures of the organic mineral structures by pushing the water molecules into a condenser at room temperature, which leads to
